I was lucky enough to be invited to see Ohbijou and Snowblink at Lucky Bar last weekend.
Both bands thoroughly impressed. It was beautiful. Ethereal.
Admittedly, I hadn’t heard of Snowblink before and their name wasn’t on the poster so seeing them was a complete surprise. The duo, comprised of Daniela Gesundheit and Dan Goldman, is as quiet and gentle as snowfall. I’m sure I’m not the first to say that. Daniella’s haunting, perfectly-pitched voice floats into your ears and melts away tension like a lengthy yoga pose. The music is interesting – playing with rhythm, repetition, bells… and the well-timed accompaniment of m.ward-like vocals by Dan Goldman. It beckons you both outside to a crisp winter day and closer to the wood fire burning inside.
I can’t say I was too excited for Ohbijou, and I completely regret that now! Hearing their recordings a few times I simply hadn’t been able to capture the intricacies of what they were doing. Seeing them perform live was enlightening. The cello and violin reverberated through the space. The vocals of lead-singer Casey Mecija surprised me with their smooth and unique quality, she was very pleasing to listen to. I’m excited to have Ohbijou on my playlist!
If you’d like to have a listen, you can check these bands out on www.grooveshark.com, purchase their music online through iTunes, or better yet – see them live and pick up their recordings then!
